Hirdmenn is a four-member stage fight collective based in Finland: professional dancer and choreographer Arttu Peltoniemi, researcher and teacher of historical fencing Joeli Takala, reenactor and teacher of iron age martial arts Julius Väliaho, and reenactor and fencing instructor and BA in history Sakari Saaristo.
Hirdmenn creates combat shows using archaeological and historical sources. We interpret these sources using our wide experience in martial arts and by studying alternative interpretations. We use close replicas of historical weapons, equipment and clothing in our shows. Our weapons are sharp, as that allows us to use them as they were once used. The audience gets to ask about and examine the weapons and other equipment up close after the show. To help our audience understand why we have chosen to represent the historical fights in a certain way, we also offer lectures on a range of subjects to go with the show.
Hirdmenn finds it important to combine historical accuracy, entertainment and education. The best possible results come from uniting the use of replicas with knowledge and experience of how they were actually used. This is the base for building a realistic fight show! We offer a show that represents different Viking-age warriors from the late 9th century to early 12th century – fighting for their lives. When experienced fighters grab their iron age weapons and the skald starts his story-telling, the show is as fierce as the circus while still representing reality.
Our request for compensation is 2600€ + food, travel, and accommodation expenses. If tents are allowed at your festival, we are happy to accommodate ourselves. The price includes our costs of fixing, repairing and maintaining the weapons and other equipment. Performers are insured.
